Rainy day trek through north Mayo.

The Irish weather is a topic that I often get asked about by my customers. Does it really rain in Ireland every day? The eternal optimist in me always answers with a reassuring “no, not every day”, but the weather here is very unpredictable. Whoever remarked that you could experience all four seasons in one day must have definitely visited here! That said, the Irish weather should in no way hinder your enjoyment or make your holiday any less amazing. The truly breathtaking beauty of our green isle is always there to be experienced regardless. I realized this yesterday on a rainy day trek through north Mayo.

Storm Doris hit the west coast of Ireland late Wednesday evening into Thursday, bringing with it strong gales and heavy rain. We were still determined to visit Downpatrick Head in Mayo on Friday, a place I had never been before. My photographer, aka my amazing husband, had a new lens he was dying to try out. We would not be disappointed. What a spectacular view! To hear the waves crashing against the coastline and experience the sheer rawness and ruggedness of the landscape was awe-inspiring. As we drove westward along the scenic coastline towards Belmullet, we caught a few lovely shots in between showers. We passed by the Ceide Fields, a neolithic site, a must see for any archaeology or history lover. We had hoped to drive down to the Black Sod, but given the heavy mist we decided to head southwards to Mulranny and Achill Island.

Mulranny is a picturesque little town, a dream stop for walkers and cyclists alike. The entire Mayo area from Westport to Achill, passing through Newport and Mulranny, has a 42km long greenway. This is the longest off road walking and cycling trail in Ireland. Achill Island was breathtaking. The winds had risen to close to gale force but we managed to stop occasionally and take in some of the awesome views. The small cottages dotted throughout the rugged landscape, sheep walking freely and the narrow winding roads made it even more magical.

I look forward to returning again someday soon. The weather though far from ideal, did not dampen our spirits or the experience. Do remember when travelling to Ireland to bring rain gear – rain jacket, hat and comfortable waterproof hiking shoes. Remember above all, they’re only showers and will soon pass. Make every moment in this truly amazing country count. Please check us out on Facebook to see more images from this trip.
