Cong: A quaint little village

Cong is a picturesque little village situated on the Galway/Mayo border. It is the perfect spot for a leisurely stroll or an overnight stay. It was here that The Quiet Man, starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara was filmed in 1952. A commemorative statue in the village centre and the Quiet Man Museum are just a few of the ways the locals still celebrate its history.

The proximity of Cong to both Lough Corrib and Lough Mask makes it an ideal spot for fishing. Boat rental is also available for the experienced fisherman. There are several wooded walks for outdoor lovers as well as daily escorted haunted walks, not for the fainthearted!

On the outskirts of the village sits the majestic Ashford Castle. It is a 13th century and recently refurbished castle that offers fine dining, a spa and unrivaled 5 star hospitality. Set on 350 acres of parkland, it offers countless possibilities for hikers and leisurely walkers alike. The splendidly maintained grounds also include a falconry school and a 9- hole golf course. A short ferry ride takes you to Inchagoill island where you can explore some monastic ruins that date back to the 5th century. Some amazing photo opportunities there if you’re lucky enough to get sunshine!

So whether you’re heading northwards from Galway or perhaps driving around the Connemara loop, it is definitely worth a stop in this quaint little village. Be sure to check out one of the many pubs to enjoy a good pint and a bit of craic with the locals. Cong is sure to delight the whole family
